A Year IN NUMBERS

Despite a reduced over all salmon catch has decreased somewhat since 2020 at East Ranga, the catch figures for 2021 do not show the full story at all. Let us look at them a little more closely and broken down over the season.

June 15-30

The total catch was 85 salmon, of which 92.9% were multi sea winter fish.

July

Total catch 953 salmon, of which 45% were multi sea winter fish. It is interesting how many were big salmon, especially when compared to 2020 where the proportion was about 13%! Whilst a big part of that was due to a lower number of smaller fish the average catch per rod was still 1.7 salmon per rod per day.

August

Total catch was 1144 salmon, of which 70% were Grilse. Here we see the runs of smaller fish arriving later than we saw last summer. The average catch per rod per day in August was approximately 2 fish.

September

The total catch was 855 salmon, of which 66% were Grilse. In September we saw the expected slight rise in large fish as the fish become aggressive in Autumn. The average daily catch per rod was 1.5 fish, which is excellent for Autumn fishing.

October

Total catch of 242 salmon in 20 days to 12 rods. The average catch per rod day in October was 1 fish, which is still pretty good. It’s important to remember that fishing in the Autumn can be effected by external factors such as weather and water levels. If I were a betting man I would put my money on the catch being higher this year, but if bigger fish continue to be the norm then we will be very happy with that too.
