MONSOON SEASON!
It has rained so heavily, with sustained strong winds, that any fisher would have been forgiven for not venturing outside. Luckily no forgiveness was required as our intrepid fishers put (large) fly to water and landed over 600 salmon for the week.
In truth we lost 5 or 6 of the 14 sessions over the past 7 days, as the river swelled and coloured, dropped, cleared, swelled and coloured again. East Ranga fishes pretty well in high, cold green / white water, but once it goes brown the river is out of shape for a session or two. Interestingly, this unseasonably aggressive weather - more like late September weather - did seem to have a less damaging effect each time the river rose again.
In terms of out fishers, all did well in the circumstances, some surpassing personal milestones and others landing a first salmon (“Marialax”). The guides led by Head Guide Gunnar and lodge staff led by Managers Alicja and Lenka, all worked tirelessly to ensure that guests had the very best river and lodge experience during tough conditions.
A last note of interest being that of the 606 salmon landed this week, mostly grilse of 4-7lbs, there are still a high number of large grilse in the 7-8lb size range, and a smattering of salmon running fresh in the 10-14lb range.
