A LOT OF GRILSE
We’ve had a storm, we’ve had a flood and now we have a hell of a run of grilse arriving. Icelandic weather never ceases to surprise!
After a stella 5 days of fishing and great conditions we began to settle into a good rythum in 24-27 July. Upper beats were starting to do better but there was a deep sense of foreboading.
The forecast was predicting a heavy downpour and strong winds. We had predictions of anywhere between 35mm and 80mm in a day. Never a good forecast.
When it came, it was brutal. The wind was enough to deter all but the best. All afternoon and all night the heavens opened and the river took a moment before rising up and colouring up to milky.
Apart from a few fish that were caught in the margins here and there we essentially lost a day’s fishing. We had a reasonable morning the next day and the afternoon certain beats really worked.
28 fish from beat 1 for Christophe G and Martin K was not to be sniffed at and at the end of yesterday we have landed 100 fish for the day. To really round it off nicely Kevin B landed a lovely fish this morning to make the 1000’s fish from the East Ranga river.
Added to the 1000 fish here the Holsa has had a late start but it has picked up well lately too. The sun is out today but the wind has got up. So I just hope the wind does not warm the mountain too much.
