BE PREPARED
The last few days has been really interesting. We had a team of mainly outright beginners at the lodge and despite only just learning to cast they did really rather well.
That being said there were many places they were just unable to reach to where the fish lie so we did not get a very honest picture of the river.
The lower beats were still enjoying good fishing but the upper beats have certainly started to pick up as well. Beat 7 seems to be the hot spot currently.
The thing that has not been predictable is the weather. Whilst this is a common Icelandic situation; it has gone from searing hot sun, to light rain to strong wind and back to any number of these again every couple of hours.
The moral of this is bring layers and a versatile line system. If you have a Skagit bring it. They might not be pretty to cast but when the wind roars and you still need to place that fly on the edge of the far bank you know you can.
Waterproof jackets and plenty of warm layers are important even in summer here. Some fishers have even been wearing gloves this week so be prepared.
The new team arrived last night and results were improved but patchy. Some very productive and reliable pools were slow and others really fished well. Sam A and Andy E had a really fun time on 5 with 7 landed and almost as many lost.
