ERUPTION
Another year another eruption
On July 10, 2023 a fissure eruption started on the Reykjanes Peninsula northwest of the sites sites of the 2021 and 2022 eruptions in Fagradalsfjall.
The new eruption site is about 38 kilometers (24 miles) from Reykjavík and does not pose immediate danger to residents or infrastructure. The National Police Commissioner urges people not to go near the site. Scientists are still working to assess the situation and there is considerable risk of gas pollution in the area. This is being constantly monitored and first responders are on site.
Similar to past eruptions in the area, there will likely be minimal impact on air traffic or flights into Keflavík Airport. During the two previous eruptions in 2021 and 2022, there was no disturbance to air traffic.
