THE GRILSE HAVE ARRIVED

We have been extremely lucky on the East Ranga with some utterly stunning fresh fish being caught in the early days of July. The fish that run the East Ranga early are often the bigger fish and this years fish have been both big and strong. We have landed well over 200 fish now with only a small percentage of fish landed being grilse.

That being said the Grilse have certainly shown up now with almost half of yesterday’s catch being one sea winter fish. The grilse are strong and aggressive making for some exciting sport alongside the larger fish still running in. We have landed a few fish in the 96 and 97 cos class as well as plenty between 85 and 95 cms.

The weather has been sunny and mostly warm but with it some strong winds at times. The river height is good but still cold so we are mainly fishing short heads with tips. Type 6 is the most popular. Short Scandi heads or skagits are helping to cut through the wind.

Daily catch numbers are steadily rising with 29 fish landed yesterday. We are looking forward to more grilse and a continued run of bigger fish off the next tides.
