Two Thousand
In terms of river condition, little has changed since our last update. The river remains comparatively low and clear. The water temperature also remains jolly low and fishing improves measurably when the water warms by a few degrees.
We continue to catch strong numbers of multi sea winter fish. There are certainly more grilse now in the river but the colder temperature has meant they have not really made it to the bank in any great numbers.
This week we saw the two rods from the AST auction lot arrive to fish. Handily named, Jim and Jim fished with gusto as well as success. What a pleasure to have two fishers with such enthusiasm and appreciation of the operation we have here.
Currently we have a mixture of UK and Icelandic clients as well as one gentleman from the states. The fishing has slightly picked up as a few quieter beats started produce a few more fish. We have had a few days of 50 fish as well as a few 35-40. This has propelled us to 2000 fish.
We are busy calculating the percentage of multi sea winter fish but I suspect it will remain similar with about 40% of the 2000 being larger fish.
What really has changed is the weather. Whilst we await the often forecast heavy rains we have seen strong winds, overcast days and light showers. As I type the forecast suggests rain but the outlook is as clear as it’s been with high cloud and a clear view all the way out to Hekla.
We continue to use a variety of different flies and depths to tempt fish but smaller flies and tubes are the best bet with a medium to fast sinking tip of poly leader.
Yesterday Andy S managed to hook and land a 98cms cock fish from Skollertangi which took him a merry dance all the way down to the box above Moldahylur. Next cast down the pool an 89 cos hen came to the net.
